Tips & Tricks

Spelling Tips & Tricks

Quick rules, common traps, and memory tricks that actually help you spell better.

1

I Before E — Except After C

“Receive”, “ceiling”, “deceit” follow the rule. But watch for exceptions: “weird”, “seize”, “their”.

2

Drop the E Before -ing

“Make” becomes “making”, “hope” becomes “hoping”. But keep the E when the suffix starts with a consonant: “hopeful”.

3

Double the Last Letter After a Short Vowel

“Run” → “running”, “sit” → “sitting”. If the vowel is long, don’t double: “eat” → “eating”.

4

Don't Confuse -tion and -sion

Use -tion after most consonants (“action”, “mention”). Use -sion after vowels and certain consonants (“decision”, “explosion”).

5

Silent Letters Are Predictable

K is silent before N (“knife”, “knock”). W is silent before R (“write”, “wrong”). B is silent after M (“climb”, “thumb”).

6

Break Long Words Into Syllables

Spell “un·for·tu·nate·ly” one chunk at a time. Syllable splitting turns intimidating words into manageable pieces.
